Batman & Spider-Man (New Age Dawning)

Although this graphic novel is short, fans of both DC or Marvel will enjoy it. Whether you like DC or Marvel, both or one over the other, this is a good choice for you. Spiderman and Batman team up to hear that Kingpin is taking his almost dead wife to Ra's Al Ghul for he heard that only Ghul can save her from death. But Batman knows there's more to it.

Spider-Man: Birth of Venom

As you read. "Spider-Man: Birth of Venom" focuses more on Spidey wearing (and eventuelly trying to get free of) his alien costume than in the fan-favorite vilain. Yeah, Venom appears and fights spidey a lot of times, but not enough to call the book "Birth of Venom". The right name would be "the symbiote saga".

House of M: Spider-Man, Fantastic Four & X-Men

The events of this book will resurface when the saga of SECOND COMING--X-MEN EVENT begins, this is a must read for fans wondering how the mutant world was destroyed....or was it?

Teaching Visual Literacy: Using Comic Books, Graphic Novels, Anime, Cartoons, and More to Develop Comprehension and Thinking Skills

I was quite satisfied by this book that mainly talks about the use of graphic novels and other visual aids in the classroom to improve comprehension instruction as well as critical literacy. Most of the articles are scholarly, while there are a few which suggest useful activities in the classroom. One of the things that I thought were helpful were the number of new literary concepts that are important to literacy and that I ignored, such as anime, picturebooks, manga, the differences between the comic book anf the graphic novel. I didn't know that there was a difference between a picturebook and a book with illustrations. The book gave me many new insights in litercy instruction that I ignored. If you want to explain the use of visuals or graphic novels in the classroom with theory and research, this is the book. However, what we may find more useful are the suggested strategies.

AMAZING SPIDERMAN 583 1st Printing OBAMA VARIANT (BLUE BACKGROUND) SOLD OUT EVERYWHERE 1st PRINT VARIANT (Amzing Spider-man, 1)

If you are one of the many suckers who purchased The Death of Superman issue a few years back, you'll love the Barack Obama comic. Books like this always claim to be collectors items, but the only collectors who pick up these items in the long run are garbage collectors. Don't be a moron, stay away from obvious ripoffs like this. show some real pride in Obama and support him and the change he hopes to bring to our country.

Amazing Spider-Man

I'm so excited! I'm already a big fan of he Marvel Omnibi. They are like long cherished dreams and wishes finally coming true. All Walt Simonson Thor's in one? All Steve Ditko SM in one? And now all Todd McFarlane Spiderman in one? Pinch me, I must still be dreaming. I still think this is Todd's best work. I like the first Spawn issues, but compared to ASM they have a worse sense of storytelling, too much unnecessary detail, too obtrusive coloring and too much breaking of panels. All too often it looks messy. It may be because David Michelinie is a better writer than Todd. As I recall, the Spiderman series Todd drew (and wrote?) after he left AMS was already worse than his ASM run. But this book is a joy to read. Sometimes you enjoy a comicbook, but when you read it 10 years or so later you think: wait a minute...did I ever enjoy this?? This not as good as I remember. This is crap! Not so with this book. It's actually better than I remember it. The artwork is still mesmerizing to look at, the story and dialogue so funny and breezy. I love the impossible poses, the proper pacing between action and drama, the cute faces (even Venom looks cute), the copious pinups of Mary Jane and the comedy (Spiderman in a gala suit...LOL) The book also contains 26 covers Todd did with SM. The quality of the book is standard Omnibus quality: excellent, if not perfect. Marvel has some pretty good editors working nowadays, who know (and probably love) what they're doing. Actually, the only thing…

Ultimate Spider-Man: Ultimate Collection, Vol. 3

Ultimate Spider-Man Ultimate Collection Vol. 3 collects the paperbacks Ultimate Spider-Man Vol. 5: Public Scrutiny and Ultimate Spider-Man Vol. 6: Venom I'm loving Marvel's "Ultimate Collections," as well as Amazon's bargain prices! At $12.00, collecting Ultimate Spider-Man #'s 28-39 and 1/2, vol. 3 is practically a dollar an issue! Aside from the price, what makes this trade paperback so good? The creative team of Bendis and Bagley tell the story of a teenage Peter Parker as he learns about the world around him. They've really hit their stride here, capturing the struggles and frustrations that Peter has in a world that frankly doesn't care about him at times. In the first half a thug dresses up as Spider-Man to rob banks, killing a major character. Then [SPOILER] Peter and MJ break up [SPOILER] which leads Peter to find some old videos and a childhood friend, Eddie Brock. The two collaborate on their parents' inheritance, a project to cure cancer which leads to the birth of Venom!Vol. 3 collects the superhero action in the life of Spider-Man, as well as the melodrama that's at the core of Peter Parker's life. Bendis writes a lot of dialogue, but there are also these panels of Peter by himself, fretting about his life -- and these moments are all the more powerful. If you're looking for some great Spider-Man stories at an excellent price, look no further: it's right here.

Marvel Masterworks: The Amazing Spider-Man - Volume 11

Marvel Masterworks: Amazing Spider-Man, v.11 ------------------------------------------------------ Some Marvel old-timers will tell you that when Stan Lee left the book, the glory days were over. But I think there was still some juice left during Gil Kane's tenure as artist (fun, kinetic, rubbery stuff), and writer Roy Thomas delivered some fab, fun stories early in his run. This volume also features the brief return of artist John Romita, and lots of groovy, gimmicky story arcs. There are the Morbius episodes, (where Spidey grew four extra arms, and Gil Kane drew an awesome version of The Lizard); also, the journey to the Savage Land and a crossover with the then-canceled Doctor Strange -- this was all great stuff. "The Amazing Spider-Man" book really lost it when Ross Andru took over as the artist: ugh. After about issue #115 or so, the stories became dull and strained, and the book slid into tedium. But this volume is still solid, vintage Marvel merriment. Go for it! (Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain book reviews)

Ultimate Spider-Man, Vol. 8 (v. 8)

Continuing the high quality that this series has seen, volume 8 covers issues 86-96 and annuals 1-2. This means we start with a story about dating Kitty Pride, run through the silver sable storyline, an adventure with the X-Men and vampires. On the way, we pick up ultimate versions of all kinds of classic villains like the Rhino and Vulture. It's an excellent read. The ultimate stories have, as a general course, included much stronger plotlines, deeper characters, and overall higher sophistication than we saw the first time Spider-Man ran up against these folks. The artwork is great cover to cover. Annual 2 was not as strong as annual 1 was - bringing Daredevil, the Punisher, Spider-Man, and Moon Knight together ... well, it's been done before and it's been done more effectively. Additionally, I would have preferred seeing Ultimate Spiral or some other Mojo choice rather than Ultimate Deadpool. Those are minor quibbles overall. I would recommend this to literally everyone. It's as much fun for those who have steeped themselves in the marvel mythology of the last 40 years as it is for the folks who are completely new to the story.

Special Effects: The History and Technique

Once I picked up the Special Effects book, I seriously could not put it down. This book is truly amazing as it serves not only as an information source, but it is also very entertaining. The first half of the book goes through the decades starting with the 1900's. In each time period Richard discuses the new advancements in film making during that decade, along with writing about some of the best movies form that time. Some of the classics include Singing in the Rain, The Wizard of Oz, and many Hitchcock movies. The second half of the book focuses on individual aspects of movie magic. From make-up and costumes, to lighting and pyrotechnics. The book cover many recent movies like Titanic, Star Wars Episode I and The Matrix. I strongly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the entertainment field. The book is easy moderate to read and full of amazing color pictures that you won't find anywhere else. Some of the pictures are accurate diagrams of film processes, such as animation, digital effects and camera techniques. I feel that form reading this book I gained a lot of basis knowledge needed to better understand the industry. Did you know that most of the snow used in movies is simply shredded paper? Or how about the fact that 90% of dialogue is movies is recorded and dubbed after the movie is shot! Find out hundreds of more amazing facts in Richard Rickitt's Special Effects: The History and Technique.

Spider-Man: The Complete Clone Saga Epic, Book 2

Not having read this since the mid 90's when it came out, issue by issue, I really enjoyed the chance to read it all in chronological order. It is easy to see why this storyline was so (initially) popular and controversial, and it is THE definitive Spider-Man storyline of the 90's (similar to the Death and Return of Superman, Knightfall, Emerald Dawn and X-Cutioner's Song to Superman, Batman, Green Lantern and X-Men respectively). Having already bought and read volume one, which suffers from a few minor pacing issus, this volume does gain momentum. The story is pretty fun- very melodramatic (as we expect from Spider-Man) with plenty of doubt and angst thrown in for good measure. The mandate for the Clone Saga seems to be 'Lets just throw is ALL in there', with a death of a major villain, Aunt May's coma, Mary-Jane's pregnancy, Peter Parker's life-threatening virus, and Kaine's visions of Mary-Jane's death. Most of the art is a real treat. Sal Buscema teamed up with Bill Sienkiwikz works a treat, creating some of the most memorable work I have ever seen on Spider-Man titles. Mark Bagley is also at the top of his game in this book. I look forward to Volumes three, four and five.

Amazing Spider-Man by JMS - Ultimate Collection Book 3

This volume is one third John Romita Jr. and two thirds Mike Deodato. One third is the end of the Ezekiel arc, one other third is giving an unsettling explanation of Gwen's death and the last third sees the unwelcome return of a forgotten, former classmate of Parker, geekier than Parker ever was. As ever, Parker's resilience goes in overdrive throughout the turmoils. Though not as good, in my opinion, as the first two volumes of J. Michael Straczynski's long run, the book remains a good read.

Untold Tales of Spider-Man

This edition features the first of what will be a long list of stories written by John S. Drew. Watch for his name in the future. He writes as though he's been writing the characters of Aunt May and Peter Parker all his life! His story is called "Moving Day," and it is the best in the collection.
